Basic rules for writing German
German grammar is not easy. It even causes headache for Germans! Nevertheless, if you remember the following simple rules, you might be able to impress Germans:
1. The verb is always in the 2nd position
Ich fahre nach Berlin. Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin. Wann fährt der Zug nach Berlin?
2. The verb and the subject are always together; they are a couple, so don’t split them!
Ich höre gerne Musik.
You cannot say „Ich gerne höre Musik“
3. When you have two verbs, the second one will in most cases be at the end
Ich muss Deutsch lernen. Ich kann morgen nicht ins Kino gehen.
4. Nouns are written with capital first letter!!!

The rules above apply to main clauses (Hauptsätze). Subordinate clauses (Nebensätze) have different rules. Subordinate clauses start with „weil“ or „dass“.
5. In subordinate clauses, the verb is at the end. Subject and verb are divorced.
Ich kann morgen nicht kommen, weil ich einen Termin habe.
Es tut mir leid, dass ich morgen nicht kommen kann.
